7 Tips to Embrace the Messiness

One of the concepts I'm passionate about is helping individuals and leaders manage their chaos and pain as they strive to water their bamboo. When it comes to change, things can get messy. I often say, "It's messy in the garden," and this idea perfectly encapsulates the process of planting and nurturing our dreams--but there will be weeds and dirt along the way we need to address.

The Concept: It's Messy in the Garden

We often face chaos and discomfort when we embark on new projects, dreams, or career changes. This is what I call "the messiness in the garden." Just like in gardening, where digging and planting can create a mess, our journeys toward growth are filled with messy phases. These phases occur not just at the beginning but throughout the entire process—from start to finish.

There is nothing created that starts out perfectly.

Why Embrace the Messiness?

  1. Messiness Is a Sign of Progress: Just because things are chaotic doesn't mean you're on the wrong path. Messiness is a natural part of growth and innovation. No creation starts perfectly.

  2. Opportunity to Learn: Embracing the mess allows us to learn and improve. Mistakes and discomfort are essential for developing competence and resilience.

  3. Growth Mindset: Viewing challenges as opportunities to practice and grow fosters a growth mindset. This mindset is crucial for overcoming obstacles and achieving long-term success.

7 Tips for Managing the Messiness

Expect Delays and Messiness

Understand that things will take longer than expected. Anticipate challenges and prepare for them.

Embrace the Chaos

Recognize that mistakes are not a sign of failure but of progress. Learn and grow from every messy phase.

Adopt a Beginner's Mindset

Lower your expectations at the start. Treat your work and leadership as a practice, allowing yourself to make and learn from mistakes.

Manage Expectations

Avoid perfectionism. Perfection rarely happens, and striving for it can be dangerous. Focus on continuous improvement instead of perfection.

Keep the Main Thing the Main Thing

Stay focused on your primary goal, your bamboo. Avoid getting distracted by less important things.

Lean on Your Bamboo Circle

Remember, you're not alone. Others have gone through similar challenges. Seek mentorship and support from your community.

Maintain a Long-Term Vision

Keep your end goal in mind, even when things are messy. Have a strong "why" to keep you motivated through tough times.

Growth is messy, and that's okay. Embrace the chaos, learn from the challenges, and keep moving forward with resilience and grace. Remember, messiness is a part of the journey, not a reason to quit. Keep watering your bamboo; you'll see the results in time.

Embrace the chaos, and your garden—and your life—will flourish in ways you never imagined.

Keep watering!
